The second generation of raw materials

The use of second-generation raw materials to produce biodiesel doesn’t compete with the use of raw materials to produce food, which makes it just as functional and profitable as the first generation. This is the goal.

The focus is on testing raw materials based on jatropha, algae, and pongamia, plus other alternatives. One of the most promising material is Jatropha curcas. This oleaginous plant, also called physic nut, isn’t suitable for food production it has important advantages:

  • It doesn’t compete with foodstuffs
  • It many grow on degraded land
  • It is drought resistand an requires little water
  • It can help to prevent erosion
  • It creates jobs

Evonik’s research department is working at full speed to develop trailor made formulations for each interesting new raw material and for the oils’ different quality profiles.
